Cooling Pads for Laptops

My laptop seems to heat up a lot when I play games for extended periods of time, therefore I’m thinking about acquiring a cooling pad. To what extent can laptop cooling pads prevent overheating? Are there any features in particular that I should search for, such as extra USB ports or fan speeds that can be adjusted? Are there any laptop models or brands that you would suggest for someone who uses their laptop for gaming a lot?
